Objectives

  • Development of diagnostic tools and therapeutic methods to monitor and treat chronic diseases, with particular emphasis on lung and cardiovascular disease.
  • Generation of a model system where patients with chronic systemic disease can be followed up by taking into account environmental risks, early diagnosis and treatment. Both cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases can often be related and environmental (air pollutants) and lifestyle factors (diet and food contaminants) play a key role in the relapse of symptomatic phenomena. Patient-related activities include diagnostic and therapeutic solutions to optimize both the quality of life and the care paths of patients from different territorial realities that may differ greatly in terms of exposure to pollutants (area Taranto, Milan).

Methodologies

Spoke 3 includes technological solutions to develop and test diagnostic tools in significant environments to detect environmental or lifestyle pollutants (PM, VOC, ozone, microplastics) which have a negative impact on the progression of chronic diseases. In brief, the following methodologies will be developed:

Wearables assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) to detect ambient air quality (e.g. PM, ozone and VOC)

Lung and intestinal tissue models generated using "organs on chips" assembled in microfluidic devices to simulate the complexity of organs and tissues and to test for microplastic/food contaminants

Advanced imaging systems already in use in the clinic, introducing patient stratification to implement AI-based diagnostics

Advanced systems for live imaging

New silicon drug screening platforms to speed up development of treatment plans and opportunities

Spoke 3

Pilot-Based Programme

Pilot 3.1 and Pilot 3.2

They are dedicated to detect and identify environmental and lifestyle factors (air pollutants - Vocs, ozone, PM - and micro- and nanoplastic) which may have a negative impact on the maintenance of patient well-being or in the exacerbation of chronic pathological manifestations.

Pilot 3.3 and 3.4

They are dedicated to generate and validate diagnostic (imaging data and point of cares) and therapeutic approaches (in silico platform) to improve them in patients suffering from lung and cardiovascular diseases.
